The glassy ocean off the South Florida coast is perfect for one last dive before Jasper reluctantly becomes a father. He and his best friend Diego venture out to explore the Alejandra, a deep shipwreck with a superstitious reputation. But as soon as they anchor, everything seems wrong. The current is deceptively strong and schools of fish eerily hover around them. Recklessly diving despite the danger, Jasper and Diego surface to discover no other boats around.
The current strips them of their anchor and casts them out to sea in relentless heat with no way to call for help. With no food, little water, and Jasper’s dog Buzz on board, Jasper and Diego’s friendship is tested. On land, Jasper’s wife Anna struggles with news of their unborn baby’s ill health. Her doctor orders a delivery, but she can’t reach Jasper. Her worry grows as the hours tick by, her pleas for help are ignored, and a terrible storm is forecast.
And then night falls. Jasper senses a shadowy figure following them just beneath the waves. He hears murmurs in the darkness. Is it a shark, his exhausted imagination, or something more insidious? Only Buzz knows… Set against a fight for survival, Deep Awakening is a charged story about life, death, hope, fear, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Great!
This book was great! I couldn’t put it down
Journey of emotions
This is a touching story about fears we can all relate to. Becoming a parent, love between partners (human and pet), friendship, and loss and what drives us through those stages and emotions in life.
I found myself eagerly continuing to read, waiting for the next twist.
Read and liked.
Read and liked. Well written, feels like you’re there with them. They went through a lot.
Where adventure and inexperience meet
As a retired USN HeO2 diving officer and deep submersible pilot with 30 years experience and over 3000 dives on either air or mixed gas I was attracted to this novel. If I were a writer I would write but I am/was a diver. Dr. Langston tells a story that begins with a small air of “perhaps this isn’t my best idea but…’ by the principal character. I enjoyed the weave and intrigue of the story. Written with relatively short chapters it was easy to set down for breaks. If you are looking for an easy yet exciting read that won’t burn your brain this is it!!
Deep Awakening
To begin with I read mostly non-fiction. The book as given to me by my son and I can count the number of novels I have read on one hand. I have to admit I truly enjoyed reading Deep Awakening. I was tempted on several occasions to skip to the final chapters to see how it would end. You find yourself getting personally and emotionally attached to the charters. I would highly recommend the book if you’re Looking for an action pack, fun filled story.
